Service & Community is incorporated into the Humanities class to
encourage students to think of themselves as thoughtful members of
the local community and the larger world. The Service & Community
Logs will be checked and collected by your Humanities teacher. Logs
are due on or before the deadline of April 15/16, 2010.
Service Hours (Must be a MINIMUM of half of the S&C hours)**
There are two ways to achieve your Service hours:
1. You may participate in the many community service projects here
at Ammons and be awarded service hours for your participation.
2. You may get involved with activities in your community along with
your family/parents/guardians. Most non-profit organizations sponsor
a variety of service activities that will allow you to earn credit.
Community Hours
You may use community hours to satisfy a MAXIMUM OF HALF your Service & Community
Hours.
Community hours may include extra-curricular, school-based activities
sponsored & approved by your teacher or coach. Check with your
Humanities teachers or Ms. Perlman to see if your activity is acceptable
BEFORE PARTICIPATING. **It is important that you work at earning your community service
hours throughout the year and be prepared for the April 15/16
deadline.
Community service is one of the requirements to receive the International
Baccalaureate Certificate at the completion of your 8th grade year.
Service & Community Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s
Ask yourself two questions to determine if what you are planning
is acceptable Service and use these questions to guide your reflections:
1. How will this help the community at large?
2. How can I make a difference?
The organization should be a non-profit group that services the broader
community.
Make sure that your parent or guardian signs the completed community
service log verifying that you participated in the activities, but
not as an activity supervisor.
Avoid clumping hours together. Log each entry separately, clearly
indicating:
1. Date & Hours
2. Authorized signature & Supervisor’s phone number
3. If you need additional logs see Ms. Perlman in the Main Office.
Don’ts
The following activities WILL NOT be accepted as Service or Community
Activities:
• baby sitting, walking pets, mowing the lawn, and general chores for
your family
• Going to work with parents, relatives or friends is a great career
shadowing experience, but not community or service.
Parents MAY NOT sign for Service or Community hours. The individual
from the organization who supervised the activity must sign the log.
If you are in doubt or would like to create a community&/or
service project using one of the above activities you must get
prior approval
from Ms. Perlman or your Humanities teacher. Points will not be
awarded after the fact.
DEADLINE is April 15/16, 2010.
